Wonderful 19century Antique Orientalist painting with view of Harem.private collection.Smaller version of Le Cherifas by Benjamin Constant.Measures:40/60cmCondition: Has been re stretched,cleaned,few minor retouch.Larger version of the painting is in Musee des Beaux-Arts de Pau.The word "Sharif" (sherif) means noble, honourable, sacred, noble. The Prophet and Fatima are both used to refer to the descendants of the Prophet .The title "saidus-sadat" is used to refer to those who are descendants of the Prophet in the male or female line. In pre-Islamic times the words "sayyid" and "sharif" were used by the Arabs when referring to noble people. With the advent of Islam, these two words were applied to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Fatima,the daughter of the Prophet ,and Ali .In addition to the children of Fatima and Ali had children from other marriages. The other children of Ali were also referred to as "Sayyid" and "Sharif". Since the end of the 4th century AH, these honorific titles have been used only when referring to the descendants of the Prophet's grandchildren
