Artist: Hiroaki Takahashi Shotei Title: Cold Winter Wind Date: ca. 1940s Publisher: Watanabe Size: 11.5" x 20" Medium: Japanese woodblock print Condition: Good with toning and light foxing. Matting has water damage that does not affect the print. Frame is in fair shape, with an illegible title label verso. Print is stamped Made in Japan No. 204 on the verso. Takahashi Shotei (Hiroaki) (1871-1945) was a Japanese artist, the first to be signed under the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo. He produced many landscapes in the Edo-era style. In 1889, he and a friend founded the Japan Youth Painting Society (Nihon Seinen Kaiga Kyokai). Early in his career, he produced and exhibited original paintings and also worked as an illustrator of scientific textbooks, magazines, and newspapers.
