Neil Gavin Welliver (1929-2005) was an American painter known for his large-scale landscape paintings. He was born in Millville, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the rural countryside of the northeastern United States. Welliver studied art at Yale University, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in painting. After completing his studies, he taught art at several universities, including the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota. Welliver's paintings often depicted the natural world, particularly the landscapes of Maine, where he lived and worked for much of his life. His paintings were notable for their bold, thick brushstrokes and their use of vibrant colors, which he used to capture the essence of the natural world. In addition to his landscapes, Welliver also created a series of paintings featuring animals, particularly deer and other wildlife. These works were characterized by their close-up, almost photographic style, and their attention to detail. Welliver's artwork was exhibited widely throughout his lifetime, and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1966. Today, his paintings can be found in the collections of museums and galleries around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London.
