Frederick Simper (American, 1914-2002) Painting. Title - Nocturnal Michigan Winter Landscape. Watercolor painting. Signed lower right, Frederick Simper 1947. Image size 14.7 inches high, 19.6 inches wide. Frame measures 22 inches high, 26.5 inches wide. In good condition. Member of the Scarab Club, Detroit, Michigan established in 1908.

Frederick Simper (1914-2002) was an American artist known for his work in printmaking and painting. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey, and grew up in Pennsylvania. Simper studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1938. He later earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University in 1947. After completing his studies, he taught at several institutions, including the University of Delaware and Skidmore College. Simper was primarily known for his work in printmaking, particularly his woodcuts and linocuts. His prints were characterized by their bold, graphic style and often featured landscapes and cityscapes, as well as figures and animals. He also worked in painting, and his canvases were known for their use of bright colors and geometric shapes. Throughout his career, Simper's work was exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world. He was a member of several art societies and organizations, including the National Academy of Design and the Society of American Graphic Artists. In addition to his work as an artist, Simper was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for many years and influenced several generations of artists. Frederick Simper passed away in 2002 in Easton, Maryland. His work can be found in many public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
