Charles Reid (1937-2019) was an American watercolorist known for his loose, expressive style and his ability to capture the human form with sensitivity and grace. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Reid's early work was influenced by the realism of the Ashcan School, but he later developed a looser, more expressive style that emphasized the spontaneous qualities of watercolor. He was particularly known for his portraits and figure studies, which often featured a limited palette and bold, gestural brushstrokes. In addition to his painting, Reid was a respected teacher and author, with several instructional books on watercolor technique to his name. He taught workshops and classes throughout the United States and Europe, and was a frequent instructor at the Scottsdale Artists' School in Arizona. Reid's artwork was exhibited widely during his lifetime, and he was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the American Watercolor Society Gold Medal and the National Watercolor Society Lifetime Achievement Award. Today, his paintings can be found in the collections of museums and galleries around the world, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
