Offset-printed poster. 57.1x44.3 cm (22½x17½”).
Poster advertising a 1966 benefit concert for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee featuring an appearance by Stokely Carmichael. ”The People‘s Republic of Rocknroll”, to quote Thomas Pynchon, was part and parcel of the anti-war and the civil rights struggles of the 1960‘s as well as other social movements of the time. Taking over from John Lewis in 1966, Carmichael would head SNCC until May 1967 when he would be replaced by H. Rap Brown. Carmichael would later adopt a black power ideology, ultimately marrying South African singer Miriam Makeba and moving to Africa to further the black liberation struggle. Art of Rock, 2.70.
