Description
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. An antique Orthodox cruciform cover for a chalice or ciborium, the red velvet cloth embroidered with bullion threads of gold and silver hues. The central Christ figure has a pearl sewn to the center of his crown between the "IC XC " Christogram. This veil protected the sacred wine or eucharist and free from contamination during the Mass. Size: 9.5" Diameter (24.1 cm)

Condition
Fraying and tears to embroidery, losses to velvet textile fibers as well. Tearing to gauze lining on verso. Christ and motifs are discernable, and pearl is intact. Staining and discoloration throughout. Fair condition.
