Description
Original oil painting on canvas in the original wood stretcher and frame. The work shows the Importunate Author illustrating "Femmes Savante of Moliere Act 3, Scene 2". The painting was done in circa 1822 by artist Gilbert Stuart Newton, born 1794-1835. The canvas was restored. It measures 24 3/4 inches x 20 1/2 inches including the frame. The provenance is the following: "Private American collection of Edward Newton Perkins, Boston according to the 1893 exhibition listing. Charles B. Perkins, 23 Perkings Street, Jamaica, inscribed in pen and ink to label verso. With Fraser-Pinney's, Montreal in 1995 as "The Important Manuscript", Private collection, Montreal." It's been exhibited at the Retrospective Exhibit of American Painting, World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893, to partial label verso. Note: Title and date taken from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition catalogue (page 59, entry 2893) where it was featured in the Retrospective Exhibit of American Painting in the Arts Palace, gallery 4, as part of a private American collection of Edward Newton Perkins, Boston.
