Item Details
Description
1971 Ford Mustang Boss 351. This very special Mustang had a pedigree, its Marti Report, filed in 2015. That report, much like the car itself, just resurfaced. The Marti Report is in the images. As ypu can see, this is a very special Mustang. Originally built with Grabber Blue paint, over it's lifetime, it was dressed in light pewter metallic. There were only 119 built in the blue Ford #3657-A paint code! That's RARE! Even though the early 1970s marked the end of the domestic muscle car era, Ford got one extra year of performance sunshine, the 1971 Mustang Boss 351, the last of the high output Mustangs that still provided a behind-the-wheel experience muscle car enthusiasts had become used to having.First, just take a look at this particular Boss 351. Light pewter metallic exterior trimmed out with satin black accents including its Ram Air hood. The last Boss Mustang had some key appearance details that picked up on the Mach 1 series including the prominent chin spoiler, front fender Boss badging behind each wheel well, bold side striping and, of course, those bulging hood scoops that were completely functional!Though critics of the time didn't like the Boss 351's slanted rear roof pillars, something about significant blind spots was mentioned, that deeply slanted rear glass gave this Mustang an appearance like no other Mustang before it. There were concerns about front visibility as well, but owners weren't complaining as it was well known this was going to be the last muscle Mustang.Trim packages included a Deluxe Décor Group and Mach 1 Sports interior that included high backed bucket seats. The dash had a 120mph speedo with odometer, 8,000 rpm tach and a centrally located fuel gauge, keeping the driver on top of those necessary gas station stops. The Mustang also still retained its oil pressure, amp and temperature gauges. But it's what is under the hood that really counts and the Boss 351 used an engine and head combination much different than the Boss 302, making use of a Cleveland-made block as opposed to the sibling Boss's Windsor. The R-code Cleveland had a ½" longer stroke which pushed compression to 11.7:1 for the forged-aluminum pistons and insured reliability with newly revised four-bolt mains. Ford meant for this to be a tough cookie. The four-speed transmission came from the factory with a T-handled shifter and could be ordered with either close or wide ratios while out back the Traction-Lok 9 inch differential sported 3.91:1 gears. This powertrain, though short lived, produced a factory estimated 330hp @ 5,400 RPM and 380 lb-ft torque @ 3,400 rpm. Straight off the showroom floor, if one actually ever resided in a dealer showroom, the Boss 351 could do 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and cover the ¼ mile in just under 15 seconds. With only 1806 of these Boss 351s ever produced in its very last year of production, makes this a highly sought after final tribute to the muscle car era. VIN #1F02R155180. Odometer shows 48,948 miles.
