PERHAPS no city in America during the colonial period entertained SO many
gallant and noble gentlemen, SO many stalwart patriots as did Williamsburg.
The gentleman of Virginia in the middle eighteenth century gave serious and
undivided attention to his dress. It was his careful regard of social distinction and his
respect for the proprieties of life that made him do this. The gentleman took as much
pains to attract as did the lady and was just as fond and proud of admiration.
We sometimes smile when we examine closely the costumes of our forefathers
