ALAN CAIGER-SMITH (ARGENTINIAN/BRITISH, 1930-2020)Â STUDIO POTTERY STONEWAREÂ BOWL, deep form with notched rim, featuring a red-golden abstract Arabic-style design to exterior on white ground. Hand-brushed signature and other marks to underside. Second half 20th/early 21st century. 7" H, 12 1/8" DÂ rim.Â
Catalogue Note: Alan Caiger-Smith was born in Buenos Aires in 1930. He arrived in London in the mid 1940s to study at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. In 1955, he founded Aldermaston Pottery, a cooperative workshop of about seven potters. Caiger-Smith became renowned for his tin-glazed earthenware with lustrous surfaces, inspired by the Near Eastern ceramic tradition. He died at the age of 90 in 2020.
