Description
UTAGAWA KUNISADA (TOYOKUNI III) (JAPANESE, 1786-1864) "MAGIC LANTERN SLIDES" WOODBLOCK PRINTS, LOT OF TWO, prints No. 1 and No. 17 from the series "Magic Lantern Slides of That Romatic Purple Figure (Sono sugata yukari no utsushi-e)", each featuring an ornately decorated interior scenes with figures. Each with artist's signature, a publisher's seal for Izumiya Ichibei (Kansendo), and censor seals. Housed under glass in matching modern frames. Mid 19th century. Each 14" x 10" object, 19 3/4" x 15 5/8" OA.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition with each having toning, some scattered spotting and stains, as-made small holes along one side margin from originally being bound, light to moderate fading including to decorative border, small tears around edge of paper; No. 17 with a few scattered holes including to robe of figure holding a book; frames with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frames.
