GEORGIAN BRITISH STERLING SILVER SALT SPOONS, LOT OF 28, comprising a Scottish example with fiddle handle possibly by Adam Elder of Edinburgh with 1829 date mark, and the remainder by London or probably London makers consisting of a pair with beaded-edged handles having marks possibly for George Smith III and 1785 date marks, a pair with marks possibly for William Chawner II and 1831 date marks, a pair with King's patterned handles with worn maker's marks and 1824 date marks, one fiddle-handled by Paul Storr with 1815 date mark, one with engraved handle having "W[?]" maker's mark and no date mark, one with engraved handle by Richard Crossley with 1789 or 1809 date mark, one with a shell bowl and feathered edge handle possibly by Richard Crossly with 1799 date mark, a thread fiddle handle example by William Eaton with 1828 date mark, a pairing with later matching engraving and fluted bowl edges of one by William Eaton with 1835 date mark and the other by Charles Eley with 1827 date mark, and five pairs and a set of four by William Eley I & William Fearn. Each with a maker's mark and one to four hallmarks including a lion passant for sterling fineness, a city mark, a date mark, and/or a duty mark. Total weight: 13.560 ozt. Late 18th/first half 19th century. 3 3/4" to 4 3/8" LOA.
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections, care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
Condition
Mostly in good to very good overall condition with minor to moderate wear, surface scratches, and other imperfections slight bending, dents, nicks, and/or worn spots to raised/engraved decoration, each with residue/surface loss due to removed accession number; Scottish spoon with repair to bowl, possibly one or a few other examples with repairs; shell spoon with a split and pin hole to bowl.
