Description
**Originally Listed At $400**
John Stewart (likely American, 20th century). "'Blue Liberty' / Route 66 / Arizona," photograph, n.d. Edition 1 of 96. Artist signature on right side matte and title and location below. An intriguing photograph titled "Blue Liberty" and appropriately featuring an homage to the Statue of Liberty cast in a shade of violet-blue. Presumably found along US Route 66 in Arizona as is inscribed along the bottom periphery, the sculpture is shown slightly out of focus and, ironically, with a chain around her neck - rather than its traditional placement at her feet. Though the shackle serves to secure her to the column behind her and inhibit thievery or weather damage, its peculiar positioning combined with the color and title of the piece suggests that the artist intended this also as a satirical commentary on the subject. A fascinating photograph that invites the viewer to ponder both the American experience and the philosophical idea of liberty. Size of image: 7.3" L x 3.8" W (18.5 cm x 9.7 cm) Size of frame: 14.2" L x 11.2" W (36.1 cm x 28.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
