Description
17th c. manuscript land document. Connecticut, January 23, 1666. 8vo, 1 pg. Also with a later manuscript addition (bottom left and verso.) ************ A very early Connecticut title deed between Robert Winchell and Abraham Randall of Windsor Connecticut, signed by Matthew Grant, Robert Winchell and Nathaniel Winchell. Matthew Grant was a town clerk of Windsor and was part of the Puritan Great Migration of 1620-1640. He was the first surveyor to come to Windsor (originally named Dorchester until 1635), which was itself the first settlement in Connecticut. Most of what is known today regarding Windsor's beginnings are derived from the records created by Grant. We find no other examples of documents signed by Matthew Grant. Among the other signatories of this document: Robert Winchell married in Windsor in 1634 and was listed as a juror in 1644; he died in 1668 only two years after this document was executed. Nathaniel was one of his 5 sons. Abraham Randall, named in this contract, is listed among the first settlers of Windsor. A very rare early Connecticut document.
