Description
Two original antique etching prints from Napoleon's Description de l'Egypte. These images are from Folio A, Volume I, plate 59. They depict bas-reliefs from the walls of the temple of Edfu.
Printed in Paris, 1809.
Height of frames: 12 in. (30.5 cm.).
Archival matted and framed.
In 1802, Napoleon ordered the Imperial Press to begin publishing the archaeological spoils of his 1798 Egyptian campaign. The meticulous drawings made by the savants that accompanied his expedition were engraved on copper plates in a work that filled ten volumes and included more than 3,000 illustrations. Most of these images had never been seen outside of Egypt before, and the Description de l'Egypte preserves in vivid detail many monuments and artifacts that are now lost.
Formerly in the collection of Patti Cadby Birch.
