Item Details
Description
Two vintage black and white theatrical photographs. The first image of 5 dancing ladies signed in pencil on reverse "Embarrassing Sisters / Weber & Fields / Broadway Music Hall" (New York). Weber's music hall was built in 1892 and demolished in 1917. The musical variety house was leased to the Weber & Fields comedy team in 1896, who made it a popular entertainment venue. But, in 1906, the duo ended their partnership (it would prove to be only temporary) and the theatre was renamed Weber's Theatre. In 1913, it became a movie house and remained so until it was torn down for offices in 1917. Total size 14" x 17". The second, a large rare autographed photo of English/American actor Richard Mansfield (1857-1907), and dated 1900. He was known for Shakespeare plays, Gilbert and Sullivan operas, and the play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In 1887 he starred in a dramatized version of the "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" one year after the publication of the novel. His transformation scenes were said to be so realistic that women in the audience fainted and men were scared to go home alone. In 1888 the production transferred to London, and coincided with the Jack the Ripper murders. Public fear of a murderer at large, one who could carry out violent, quick and precise killings, led to accusations that Mansfield, because of his skill in quick changes, was the murderer. This forced the production to close. He came to American in the late 19th century and had many successful shows in NY city's Broadway theaters.
