Description
A beautiful tapestry style lolling arm chair having an embroidered seat and back in the French "Lady and the Unicorn" pattern that appears to be worked in needlepoint and petit point, square front legs with side and cross stretchers. The shaped arms are reeded with rosette terminals. The textile covering the shaped back is decorated with a lady holding a flag flanked by a unicorn on her left and a lion on her right - 2 monkeys are shown in the trees; the seat decorated with a lion and flag in garden setting. This embroidery after similar tapestries on display in the Musee de Cluny in Paris (Natural Museum of the Middle Ages). Slight wear to the textile on one side of the back under the arm, hardly noticeable, otherwise very good condition, probably late 19th century. Measures 26 3/4"W x 31"D x 43 3/4" x 18" seat height.
