Tiffany & Company, New York, sterling silver four-footed plateau, circa 1884-5, in the Japonisme taste, the design attributed to Charles Osborne (British-American, 1847-1920), the plateau allover hammered, the scalloped undulating wave-like edges with well-chased sprays of seaweed, and the cavetto with a Florentine monogram engraved in seaweed form "TPJC," struck to underside "Tiffany & Co. / 9801 MAKERS 444 / Sterling Silver / M" for the period of 1870-1891.

Note: The vigorous and dramatic aquatic design of this work may be attributed to Charles Osborne, being extremely close to his "Oriva" punchbowl of 1884 commissioned by James Gordon Bennet of the New York Yacht Club and other works of the period which utilize sea creatures against a hammered surface (cf. Loring, J. "Magnificent Tiffany Silver" Abrams, New York: 2001, p. 162).
