Item Details
Description
Featured in this lot are Rare Vintage "Moon and Star" Clear Pedestal Carnival Glass by LE Smith Glass, circa 1950, including: Covered Candy Dish-Compote, Covered Butter / Candy Dish, and Creamer. In 1907, Louis ("Lew") E. Smith and his associates founded the L.E. Smith Glass Co., at Jeannette, PA, where they leased the decorating plant of the McKee-Jeannette Glass Co. One of its early customers was the famous F. W. Woolworth retail chain. Smith branched out into many innovative areas of glassmaking, often with a practical, utilitarian slant. It is credited with making the first headlight lens for the Ford Motor's Model T automobiles, and subsequently developing non-glare headlights. ?In the 1950s-1960s, the business developed into decorative glassware. Various glass factories made pieces in the ever-popular Moon and Star pattern, and L E Smith also got in its appeal. In the 1960s Island Mould Company made some Moon and Star moulds and leased them to L E Smith. Most of Smith's Moon and Star pieces are not marked, but there are some (hard to find) that have the Smith mark (a letter S with a G in the top part of the S and a C in the bottom part of the S). All three pieces share the "Moon and Star" pattern with blue and amber painted details, the base of the pedestals and the lids display the same intricate detailing, each showcasing the beautiful pattern. Highly prized by "carnival glass" collectors, no obvious marring noted. Compote measures 8"H x 4.5"W, butter dish measures 6"H x 7.25"W, and creamer measures 5.75"H x 5"W at handle.
