Hyde & Shattuck 12GA Single Barrel Hammer Shotgun
Hyde & Shattuck 12GA Single Barrel Hammer Shotgun
Item Details
Description
Unusual and rare Hyde & Shattuck Co, Hatfield, Massachusetts made single barrel 12 gauge hammer shotgun. The Unique “double trigger” action of the Hyde & Shattuck is similar to the famed Frank Wesson design in which the front trigger is pulled to drop the barrel for loading and unloading and the rear trigger activates firing. This simple yet strong design was popular for a very short time during the early years of fixed cartridge ammunition development and quickly became replaced with the more common top lever barrel release that is still used today. The Hyde & Shattuck Company was active for a very short period of time from 1877-1880. After 1880, the name changed to simply C. S. Shattuck, thus accurately dating the manufacture of this rare shotgun to the three year period at the end of the 1870s. The matching serial number on the receiver and barrel of this example is 467, and the total output of arms like this was very limited. Examples today are seldom encountered. The 30” barrel still reveals fine twist steel and the barrel retains a fine deep aged patina while appearing to have never been scoured or cleaned. The receiver similarly has aged dark with small Hyde & Shattuck markings on the side. The barrel to receiver fit is tight and both triggers function properly. The butt stock shows two small typical chip repairs at the upper sides of the wrist/receiver juncture and is basically tight and strong with original smooth steel butt plate. The stock also appears to have never been sanded or refinished. The bore is surprisingly better than most on such early shotguns with only shallow surface roughness that ought to brush out better. This unusual shotgun was one of the first to make the transition from muzzle loading to cartridge firing. At the time, they were quite expensive to produce with retail prices relatively high. This was one of the more interesting and novel designs which today can only be viewed with appreciation for a time in American history when arms makers were inventing revolutionary methods of firing fixed cartridge ammunition. With double trigger bows and flowing trigger guard, reminiscent of the famed Hawken muzzle loading rifles, the Hyde & Shattuck was certainly one of the most unique and attractive designs to come out of this interesting period. Not often seen on the collector market today. Serial Number: 467. This firearm qualifies as an antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*
