Description
The physiognomic portrait of the central figure indicates that the subject is a historical figure, an ascetic, who is worshipped by Rama, Sita and Hanuman. These elements suggest that he is a representative of the Ramanandi sect, known for its devotion to Rama. The specific affiliation is further corroborated by the symbols that the ascetic wears on his forehead, neck and chest. This is a late-Pahari painting, as indicated by the colours of the idyllic landscape beyond the pavilion. Thanks to the relations established with the rulers of Kullu, Chamba, Mandi, Nurpur and Sirmaur, the Ramanandi sect became influential in these areas as early as the 17th century. Despite its popularity, paintings like this one are rare.
