Sugar Ray Robinson Press Photo Pair Against Basilio & Gavilan
A pair of two black and white press photos depicting professional boxer Sugar Ray Robinson, measuring 7" x 9" and 11" x 14" respectively. The first, dated September 23, 1948 shows Kid Gavilan scoring a right punch to Robinson's head in the eighth round while the second, dated a decade later on March 27, 1958, shows Robinson on the offensive with opponent Carmen Basilio ducking out of the way in the eleventh. Both feature captions or associated newspaper clippings adhered to verso, original to their time with the press. Exhibits moderate wear, including surface creasing, areas of darkened markings, and scattered soiling on verso. Else, good condition- an exciting pairing!
Walker Smith Jr. (1921-1989), better known as Sugar Ray Robinson, was an American professional boxer who competed from 1940 to 1965 and is often referred to as one of the greatest boxers of all time, pound-for-pound. His professional career would officially start in 1940, after which he went on to have a 91-fight win streak between 1943 and 1951. After a brief retirement, he became the first boxer in history to win a divisional world championship five times, a feat he accomplished by defeating Carmen Basilio in 1958 to regain the middleweight championship.
