Colin Powell's Vietnam Era Military Flag Bag

Military Flag Bag, 7.5" x 18", carried by Colin Powell during the Vietnam war. The large green flag bag is folded in the encapsulation with Black "U.S" lettering on the front of the bag. The flag bag originates from the Estate of Colin Powell. Encapsulated by CAG to a size of 10.25'' x 21''.

Powell deployed to Vietnam twice. The first deployment was from 1962 to 1963, and the second was from 1968 to 1969. During his first tour, then-Cpt. Powell was the senior tactical advisor to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam.

On November 16, 1968, Powell was traveling by helicopter with his commanding officer, Major General Charles M. Gettys, to inspect a captured North Vietnamese camp when their chopper clipped a tree during landing and crashed.

In the violent crash, Powell broke his ankle, but the injury didn’t prevent him from rushing back into the wreckage again and again to save the lives of Gettys, his chief of staff and one of the pilots. During the risky endeavor, Powell tore away parts of the flaming wreckage with his bare hands to free a trapped comrade, knowing that the wrecked chopper could explode at any second.

Powell received the Soldier’s Medal for his bravery that day, which added to the Bronze Star and Purple Heart that he also earned during his two tours in Vietnam.
