This photograph of President Nixon and Prince Charles was taken on July 18, 1970 in the Oval Office. According to President Nixon's daily diary from that day, Nixon conversed with Prince Charles there for about 90 minutes (from 5:00 to 6:25 pm) before dinner and a round of farewells for the royals, who left that evening around 8:30 pm.
Prince Charles and his sister Princess Anne arrived in the United States on July 16, 1970 for a 2-day unofficial visit to Washington, D.C. and its environs. The young royals, then 21 and 19 years old, followed a dizzying itinerary: sightseeing included visits to the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Camp David via helicopter, Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institution's Space Museum, and even a Washington Senators baseball game! Charles and Anne were often escorted by Nixon's daughters Tricia and Julie as well as David Eisenhower, Julie's husband. In a sanitized presidential memorandum dated January 9, 1970, Nixon wrote to Dr. Henry Kissinger regarding Charles's proposed visit, and strategized about how to "get an off beat effective PR benefit from it (both for him and for us.)" Nixon's motives might have also extended to matrimonial prospects and international alliances; Prince Charles later claimed in a 2015 CNN interview with journalist Max Foster that at "the time…they were trying to marry me off to Tricia Nixon." Nixon was three years Charles's senior.
