Thomas-Victor Sergent French Palissy Ware Encrier / Pen Rest and ink Stand
Circa 1875
The inkstand composed of three recessed wells and a pen rest, the three flat covers each with a snail knop, the surface mottled in blue and manganese, the side gadrooned and molded with swags in shades of green, cream, blue and brown, raised on the backs of four winged caryatid monopodia, signed with brown painted T.S. initials mark. Height 3 1/4 inches, width 10 3/4 inches.

KL001643. Marilyn G. Karmason with Joan B. Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, 1989, p. 230 (as Portuguese). Thomas Victor Sergent (French, c. 1830- c. 1890) ceramicist under his father-in-law Victor Barbizet, a Parisian artisan who specialized in pieces inspired by Bernard Palissy.
