Minton Renaissance Style Palissy Ware Majolica Oval Fecundity Dish
Circa 1858
The center painted with three reclining women in a barren landscape attended by two boys holding a spilling cornucopia, the recessed border molded in relief with recumbent images of Mercury, Juno, Neptune, and Leda, signed with the initials E.L. for Émile-Aubert Lessore. Width 15 inches.

Émile-Aubert Lessore (French 1805-1876), painter recorded at Sèvres, and independently in Paris emigrated to England in 1858. After a short stay in London, he first worked for Minton before joining Wedgwood in the Spring of 1860.

Provenance:
J.D. Rochfort (is recorded as an artist at Minton in the 1860's and 70s). Sir Frederick Milbanks, bequeathed to Sir Frederick Richard Milbanks, sold Norton Manor, near Presteigne, Radnorshire, Powys, Wales, Sotheby's, indistinct sale no. possibly 4055 or 4065, 1869, lot 51 (label and letter).
