Tarsos, Cilicia Ar. stater, 361-334 BC. BLTRZ, "BAAL TARZ" = BAALTARS; Baal of Tarsos enthroned left, head facing, holding eagle, corn-ear and bunch of grapes in right hand, lotus-headed sceptre in left. Rev. MZDI, "MAZDAI" = MAZAIOS; lion left, attacking and bringing down a bull.
Mazaios had an important command in the second half of the fourth century BC under the reign of Artaxerxes II (404-359), Artaxerxes III (359-338), Arses (338-336) and finally Darius III Codoman (336-330). He was satrap of Cilicia, then after 351, governor of Trans-Euphratesia. In 334, he was replaced by Arsames. When taking of Tarsus in 333 BC, Mazaios rallied to Alexander the Great. After the capture of Babylon in 331, he was appointed governor of the region and died in 328 BC.
