Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A cast copper rectangular pectoral pendant presenting two figures within a border. The figures stand in the center with fanning crescent shaped headdresses, holding two spears at their sides. The verso of the ornament displays incised lines that create details on the headdresses and clothing of the figures. The figures probably represent Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty believed to have come from the south by sea and a tp colonize the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. Size: 4.1" W x 2.375" H (10.4 cm x 6 cm)

Condition
Loss to one spear shaft. Loss to bottom center and stable hairline fissure radiating down the center. Softening of details and age commensurate surface wear. Green patina and old inventory label on verso.
