Description
"Mary Cassatt: A Biography of the Great American Painter" by Nancy Hale, published by Doubleday, New York, 1975; stated First Edition; illustrated.
Dust jacket [edge wear and small damages: see photos]; hard boards, original publisher's cloth, red and gold decorations and lettering on spine, 6.1/4" x 9.1/2"; 333 pages including Index, very good condition.
Assesses each stage of the American artist's development and her relations with Impressionism and individual Impressionist painters.
"A must-read for Cassatt fans. This is the third book I have read about Mary Cassatt..., and I LOVED THIS BOOK. Two aspects worth mentioning: 1) Since Nancy Hale is herself an artist, she is liberal with inferences and thoughts pertaining both to Cassatt and her fellow Impressionists. I loved the color commentary, and I suspect Hale is sharing informed opinions as the bibliography for this book is wonderfully robust and 2) Hale weaves the stories behind Cassatt's many relationships together so the reader can understand Cassatt’s personality, historical/ Victorian context and life in Paris as well as Philadelphia for a young woman bucking many norms. I checked the book out of the library but would love to purchase it for my home collection." [a private review]
