Description
Royal Octavo First Edition. Vol I, II, III, IV, V, VI & VII. The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories. Published by J.J. Audubon. Ca. 1840-1844.Lith, Printed and colored by J.T.Bowen. The complete set contains 500 hand-colored aquatint copperplate engravings with tissue guards. The bindings are full calfskin. All volumes appear to have proffesionally replaced boards and spines.The titles, or partial titles, have been glued to the spines. Some boards are loose or separated and spines have areas of flaking. Pages have minor foxing and light discoloration. Overall this set is in goodcondition. Each book contains a list of subscribers. The original owner was Isaac Davenport of the New England area. It is estimated that 160-180 complete sets of the first edition 'Birds of America' wereoriginally issued. Similar examples have sold from 30,000 to 70,000 at auction. Steve Weller Collection
