Description
m ORIGINAL,ALECOS FASSIANOS DU 9 JUIN AU 5 NOVEMBRE 2001 CHATEAU DE CHENONCEAUArtist:Alecos Fassianos (Greek, born 1935- 2022)Title:Château de Chenonceau , 2001Medium:color lithographSize:68 x 46 cm. (27 x 18 in.)Collotype (Phototypie in French, Collotipia in Italian, Lichtdruck in German and Collotype in English) was a photomechanical printing procedure (in graphic arts workshops). Conceived in 1856 by Louis Alphonse Poitevin, it was later perfected by Joseph Albert, for which it was also spread under the name of Albertipo. On a matrix consisting of a glass plate, a layer of photosensitive emulsion consisting of bichromated gelatin was spread, which was subjected to firing, and then impressed by contact with the photographic negative. The gelatin became more insoluble in the transparent areas of it. In this way the ink was more easily absorbed in these transparent areas. This procedure allowed a limited number of 500 copies to be shot; because the gelatin deteriorated during the printing process, and sharpness was lost. This system was widely used in postcard printing, from 1897 to the middle of the 20th century. In Spain, the photographer J. Laurent also had a collotype printing press, since 1880, for editions of plates and book illustrations. But only his successor Lacoste (former Laurent house) published postcards from the year 1900. The Hauser and Menet house, established in Madrid in 1890, was considered the best Spanish collotype printer. He achieved great perfection, editing sheets and postcards with very good sharpness. Among the photographers who used this system, to print copies, we can mention Alfred Stieglitz.
