Likely influenced by the attempt at cultural marriage between Spanish Mexico, its Native Peoples and her French and Austrian colonists. A lovely Wall Decoration for a Kitchen or Powder Room. Possibly a very valuable reflection of the assimilation of these worlds.
There is a Coat-of-Arms baked into the back of the Plate with a strong letter 'R' and other weaker letters, so it was ordered for production possibly for a larger set of dinnerware which has been scattered across time.
Black Easel not included and is for display purposes only.
There is a crack on only the face of the plate which does not reveal on the back of the plate so it seems the dish was professionally repaired or is damaged on its face only which means that the layers between are intact and of high quality ceramic.
Measures: D: 7.75 & H 1.2”, Plate weighs about 10 1/8oz or 288g.
BACKGROUND:
In 1877, Samuel Lear constructed a small pottery on Mayer Street in Hanley. The firm expanded into new premises on High Street in 1882 where majolica and other wares were produced. The business failed in 1886 and creditors closed both the Mayer Street and High Street Works. Thomas Forester purchased both potteries in 1887 although their subsequent disposition remains uncertain.
The known patterns of Lear include Sunflower and Urn, Lily of the Valley, and Pond Lily and Rope. None of these bear marks, but Lear majolica can be documented by illustrated advertisements in the Pottery Gazette. Some pieces bear a British Registry Mark on a typically white under-surface.
