Description
BACCARAT 1964 Acid-etched Signed Sulfide Paperweight of Pope John XXIII in an Original Baccarat Box in very good condition, measures 4-1/8" x 4-1/8" x 2-1/8" with Original Certificate of Authenticity Papers (COA).
A white cameo of the pontiff rests on star-cut translucent yellow ground. Six and one facets. Limited edition of 300. Acid-etched Baccarat insignia on the base.
This beautiful Baccarat Sulphide Paperweight comes with its original box and paperwork certifying that this piece is part of a limited edition. From the enclosed papers which state:
"Sulphide Paperweights, or 'cameos', were extremely popular in the middle of the last century, and Baccarat's lead in that field was readily acknowledged the world over. Many of the paperweights made by Baccarat at that time are among the most treasured by today's collectors. After a 'Coronation' paperweight portraying Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, followed by a series of cameos of American presidents and some prominent world or historical figures, none of which are any longer available, Baccarat is now presenting this edition of the late Pope, John XXIII. The cameo, signed and dated, is the work of Albert David, official sculptor of the French mint and widely known for his medals and medallions. The edition of this sulphide paperweight planned in September, 1964, will be limited by Baccarat to 2000 pieces of the small or regular size with background colors of either Red or Golden Yellow. In addition, 300 large overlays will be made, with either a red or a golden yellow background and with various types of side-faceting, after which the cameo mold will be destroyed so that no more can be made. This is to certify that the enclosed paperweight is part of this edition for the Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat, Baccarat, Inc."
When sunlight hits the paperweight, a rainbow spectrum of colors projects onto the surrounding surfaces. The profile bust is white, crisp and sharp, and can be seen from all faceted sides, not only through the top.
The paperweight measures 2.5" dia. top (concavity dia top 1 5/8") x 1 1/2" H x 2.5" base and weighs 12 1/2oz or 355g.
Condition: Perfect with no chips, cracks, breaks, flakes, or scratches; it appears to be unused and un-displayed, simply stored away in the original box.
Paperweight has the provenance of an important deceased New Orleans collector, Felix H. Kuntz the Dean of Americana.
