Antique Jacquard Signature Block Coverlet, Dated 1838s, Bird Border, For Display or Cutter, Loom Woven
Presenting a antique 1838 jacquard coverlet, two-piece in construction, woven in deep blue wool, red and white wool and cotton. 19th century Pennsylvania jacquard coverlet with geometric, floral and bird designs. Made of natural undyed cotton and dyed wool, with center seam with a soft wool fibers. It is reversible and has no fringes on the bottom or top.
Signature border block read " ANGSTAD & SCHNEE, LEWISBURG PENN., 1838
William Schnee and Benjamin Angstadt were active in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Schnee later continued as a weaver alone in the 1830's working in Union County.
This signed loomed bedcover is in good original condition with no fading, no color bleeding, and no repairs. The side fringes edges have losses. Color is still vibrant. No holes. Probably never having been washed. It was most likely used on special occasions and spent most of it's life stored to be handed down to the next generation. There are a few small brown oxidation storage spots scattered and a water stain as seen in last photo. One end has been hand turned rolled edge later in its life. The fiber is strong and is still sturdy condition and still has great body, not weak at all.
Measures 95-1/2" x 73".
This lovely early wool bed cover can be displayed or cut up for pillow fabric or framed fabric into smaller pieces, a possible cutter coverlet.
