Description
Ting, Walasse (Ding Xiongquan) (Chinese/American, 1929-2010), Yellow Rain, 1969, acrylic on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse, 70 x 80 inches, in a wood strip frame. Provenance: Lefebre Gallery, NYC; exhibited Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Art, 1970, Carnegie Museum of Art; purchased from the exhibit by Jane Callomon (later, Jane Arkus); estate of Jane and Leon Arkus. Leon Arkus was the museum's director from 1969 to 1980, and the 1970 International was the first one under his tenure. When Jane purchased the painting from the exhibit Leon installed it in her house and then asked her out on a date. They got married the following year and remained married until Leon's death in 1999. Anyone who had the pleasure of entering the Arkus house will remember Yellow Rain taking up an entire wall of the dining room. The painting is now being sold to benefit the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
