Title is A Night in Fort Peck. 20" by 23" framed. William Standing (1904 - 1951) was active/lived in Montana. William Standing is known for Horse, landscape, Indian, genre. William Standing was born July 27, 1904 in Oswego, Montana. He was a Native American, member of the Assiniboine Tribe. Educated at the Wolf Point Mission School and, from 1920-24, at the Haskell Indian School in Lawrence where he received his formal art instruction. Standing was one of the five Kiowa Indians who became special students at the Univ. of Oklahoma under the guidance of Oscar Jacobson during the 1920s. After attending Haskell Institute, he worked as an interior decorator in Kansas. Standing is best known for his humorous sketches published as postcards, and he was also adept in oil, watercolor, and clay. During the 1930s, in collaboration with James Long, he produced a book, The Land of the Nakoda. This volume, an in-depth sketch study of the Assiniboine tribe, is the focal point of the greatest body of Standing's works. He died on June 27, 1951 in Oswego, Montana.
