Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca culture, ca. 11th to 15th century CE. A rare matching pair of petite llanke sandals that appear to be child sized, but were likely for adults- the sole made from leather with camelid (alpaca or llama) wool cords .The leather may have come from a deer or a camelid such as a llama or alpaca. As with any clothing, the material and decoration indicated status - these are probably a social rank above the vegetal fiber footwear worn by the common peasantry when they were not barefoot. llanke sandals sometimes only covered only part of the foot, leaving the toes exposed for gripping - which seems to be the case with this pair since the sole is quite wide but short. Size: 6" L x 3.75" W (15.2 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Winters collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; ex-Arte Xibalba, Osprey, Florida, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
