Description
COLLECTION OF A PROMINENT MONTREAL FAMILY
(LOTS 1003, 1007, 1014, 1018, 1033 and 1043)
IMPORTANT ANTIQUE CARVED WHITE JADE ROOSTER PLAQUE, SIGNED ZIGANG
CHINA
Of rectangular form and with a desirable 2/3 size ratio, thickly carved in a very pleasing milky white stone with little or no inclusions. Low
relief carving showing a cockerel and rockery to one side. Very desirable as a subject where both negative space and superbly skilled carving play off one another. The cockerel is nicely defined with detailed carving to depict the individual feathers and flowing movement in the body. The reverse shows a poem and signature of the workshop for Zigang. Both sides are framed by writhing archaic formed dragons. What would otherwise be plain areas are here decorated with fine and
pleasing wheel-cut semi-circular lines. Pierced at top for suspension.
