Description
This Greek classic themed polymer intaglio is by internationally renowned Wisconsin printmaker and sculptor Dean Meeker (1920-2002). It is titled "Phaethon and the Horses of the Sun" and depicts the tragic story of Phaethon, the mortal son of the sun god Helios. The tragedy occurs when Phaethon, granted a wish by his father, chooses to take the chariot of fire across the sky for one day and loses control. The runaway chariot creates fire across the sky and the Milky Way. Zeus, afraid of further destruction, strikes down and kills the boy with a thunderbolt. It measures 30" tall X 22" across. It is signed in the lower right corner. It is numbered 49 in an edition of 50. Meeker started as a sculptor but quickly became influential and innovative printmaker. He was the first printmaker to overprint silkscreens with polymer intaglio, giving his works a 3 Dimensional quality. He was the co-inventor of the Meeker-McFee motorized etching press. He taught Silkscreening at University of Wisconsin Madison for 46 years. He was a 1959 recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. His Sculptures, paintings and prints are in over 100 important world collections to include New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery in Washington DC, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Victoria and Albert Museum.
