Description
This quality framed hand cut serigraph is by First Nations artist Norman Tait (1941-2016). It is titled "Big Beaver" and numbered 282/400. It is signed in pencil in the lower right corner. Tait was a British Colombia, Canadian Nisga'a Tsimshian First Nations artist who was also known for his totem pole carvings. This particular print, dated 1982 was in commemoration of the preview of the opening of the permanent exhibit Maritime Peoples of the Arctic & Northwest Coast at the Field Museum in Chicago. Tait's crest affiliation "Eagle Beaver" came through his mother's lineage. He was also the carver of the "Big Beaver" totem pole, part of the exhibit, and this work depicts figures from the Beaver legend. On the reverse is documentation about Tait and his work, as well as a history what these works represent, and passed down to him in an oral tradition from his ancestors. This work was purchased at the Latimer Gallery in Vancouver BC.
