Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842) was a Scottish anatomist, physiologist and surgeon. His brother, John Bell, was also a well known surgeon during his time. After encountering some difficulties with medical politics in Edinburgh, he set up practice in London around 1804. He became one of the first physicians to combine the study of neuroanatomy with clinical practice. After a very distinguished career, he returned to Scotland in 1826 where he accepted the position of professor of surgery at Edinburgh. He also had considerable artistic talents, which are highlighted in this work.
