He was an American painter, known for his paintings and drawings of male nudes. His work combines elements of homoeroticism and social criticism, in a style often called pictorial realism. In 1934 he painted The Fleet's In! This painting, featuring sailors, women, and a homosexual, was the subject of public controversy and was withdrawn from the Corcoran Gallery. This fact helped launch his career. He worked as a commercial illustrator, but his partner, artist Jared French, convinced him to devote himself entirely to painting. He lived with Jon Anderson, his romantic partner, for 35 years, who was the inspiration for much of his work. He died in 1999 at his home in Weston, Connecticut, just five days shy of his 95th birthday. Born: December 17, 1904, Manhattan, New York, United States Died: December 12, 1999, Weston, Connecticut, United States.
