Description
KARL LAGERFELD (1933-2019)
Philippe Reynaud
Limited Edition Print
11 1/2" x 14"
Karl Lagerfeld was a world-renowned German fashion designer who was described by Vogue as the "unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment." Born on September 10, 1933 in Hamburg, Germany, he studied at the Lycée Montaigne in Paris where he majored in drawing and history. After winning a design competition in 1955, Lagerfeld was hired as the assistant of noted post-war fashion designer Pierre Balmain. He worked at Balmain for the next three years before launching his first collection in 1958 under the name Roland Karl, garnering widespread critical acclaim and international attention. In 1983, Lagerfeld started as the creative director of Chanel, the role for which he is best known. His “uniform” of black sunglasses, high starched white collar, and black suit is instantly recognizable by those in and outside the fashion world, and was reproduced in teddy bear form in 2008 by the toy company Steiff. His celebrity profile only grew following the 2007 documentary focusing on his life and work, Lagerfeld Confidential. Lagerfeld died on February 19, 2019 in Paris, France at the age of 85.
