Description
A carved wooden dance mask with incised designs in the coiffure accented with kaolin clay pigments, well handled surface and classic form. Among the Lwalwa, this particular style of mask is know as Mvondo and is one of the two types of Lwalwa male masks (Felix 1987). The small rope and hole between the nose and mouth was used to secure the mask by means of a “bite-string” which is still evident. The mask measures 11 x 8.5 inches ( 16 inches on custom display stand which is included) Provenance: Ex Dr Gilbert Jackson, Maryland, USA.
