Artist Biography:
Jack Levine was an American social realist painter born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1915. He was the youngest of eight siblings and grew up in a working-class Jewish family. Levine attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and later studied at the Art Students League of New York. His paintings often depicted the gritty reality of urban life, focusing on themes such as poverty, crime, and corruption. Levine's style was influenced by the Old Masters, particularly Francisco de Goya, and his use of satire and humor in his paintings was a hallmark of his work. He was an important figure in the American art world in the mid-20th century, and his paintings can be found in major museums and collections around the world. Levine passed away in 2010 at the age of 95.
