Item Details
Description
  • Title: “Caribou”
  • Artist: Inuit Artist (Unidentified), Cape Dorset/Kinngait, Canada
  • Date Period: circa 1985-199
  • Materials: Stone and Antler
  • Dimensions: 5.75”h x 8w” x 3”d
  • Description: Has no discernible signature, but was created by a carver of great sensitivity and skill. The movement is dynamic and realistic, carefully executed, and the finish of both the stone and antler components is soft, smooth, and well-polished. The stone itself appears similar to the variegated green stone typically found and used by artists of the CapeDorset/Kinngait region. Remnants of hand tool markings on the bottoms of the hooves indicate that it was carved “the old way” (ie. with rasps, files, sand-paper, etc.) and thus date the piece to circa 1990 or earlier. Great attention to detail was given to the face, eyes, ears, hooves, and other components–a high level of definition on an 8” carving. Just a beautiful piece!
