Fridtjof Nansen was a Norwegian arctic scientist who voyaged throughout the North and was one of the most famous polar explorers of the 19th-century. During the Fram Expedition, he encountered large Eskimo populations, learning from them and their nomadic tendencies in the New Siberian Islands, in search of the North Pole. Nansen made extensive records of this journey which were published under the title Farthest North.

USS Vesuvius, commissioned 1890, was a unique vessel in the United States Navy inventory which marked a departure from more conventional forms of main battery armament. She is considered a dynamite gun cruiser and was essentially an operational testbed for large dynamite guns. She was launched commissioned on 2 June 1890 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard with Lieutenant Seaton Schroeder (1849–1922) in command.
