Description
1886 Victor Hugo Toilers of the Sea French Literature Adventure Octopus HETZEL
Most known for his works Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables, Victor Hugo was one of the most prolific French authors of the 19th-century. One Hugos lesser-known works was Toilers of the Sea – a story dealing with post-Napoleonic wars France during the Industrial Revolution. This story of adventure covers shipwrecks, romance, and even a massive sea battle with an octopus!
This impressive 1869 edition was published by the French publisher, Hetzel, who was famous for Jules Vernes “Extraordinary Voyages”. This edition, collected and edited by Lucien Biart, includes numerous in-text illustrations by Tony Johannot.
Note on dating: like many Hetzel editions, this printing does not display the correct date on the title page. The dating comes from the ads in the back of the book – note the ads in this volume advertise for the releases in the 1886 print year.
