Description
Angola, New York. 1860s. Pine, glass, wire, tin, ceramic, brass burner. Small size "lunchbox" shape patent lantern consisting of a painted wooden case with red and gold stencilling, four white ceramic knobs on the lid and an iron carrying handle. With glass plates to three sides. The tin back opens to accommodate the small brass oil burner. The lid can be fully opened but it is also ventilated when closed. Stencilled on top, "M.B. Ostrom, Manufacturer, Angola, New York, Patented March 14th 1865 by D.L. Jacques". Excellent. From the Catherine Thuro Collection. 9.25"H x 8"W x 5.25"D.
